I get this question often. It's usually followed by "...for getting rid of my belly/thighs/butt/tricep fat"... etc.

Poll: Should Employers Mandate That Workers Eat Healthy?

The New York Health Department recently sent a memo to its 3000 employees stating that employees are more or less required to eat healthier while on the job.

The memo was entitled "Life in the Cubicle Village" and covered several workplace guidelines in addition to the dietary ones, including personal hygiene, use of perfumes, and displaying offensive material in cubicles, but does this infringe on their workers' rights?

Studies Tie Heart Drugs to Diabetes and Breast Cancer

Two separate studies have linked the heart drugs Lipitor (used to treat high cholesterol) and Digoxin (prescribed to patients with heart failure or abnormal heart beats) to higher risk of diabetes and breast cancer, respectively.

According to the Lipitor website, people with diabetes are advised to consult their doctor before starting Lipitor (known generically as Atorvastatin). And in 2008, research implicated Digoxin (marketed as Lanoxin and Digitek) with increased risk of breast cancer.

Music and Laughter Help Lower Blood Pressure

A funny joke or listening to music may help lower your blood pressure, says a new study, maybe as much as losing weight or cutting salt from your diet.

The results were modest, but the reductions in blood pressure were associated with a 5% to 15% lower risk of dying from heart disease.

In the United States, one out of three people have high blood pressure, and one in five people have undiagnosed blood pressure; according to the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

Vegans Have High Heart Risks

Eating a vegan diet may increase your risk of blood clots and atherosclerosis, suggests a new study. Both are risk factors for heart attacks and stroke.

Unlike some vegetarian diets which permit milk and cheese, a vegan diet excludes all animal foods, including dairy products.

But the new study claims a vegan diet - usually touted for its health benefits - is critically low in several key nutrients, such as vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids, prompting experts to recommend vegans augment their diet, or take vitamin supplements.

Watching Too Much TV Hurts Your Heart

Sitting on the couch, watching a lot of television or staring at a computer screen all day may harm your heart and shorten your life, suggests a new study, even if you get regular exercise.

Inactivity and obesity are two major factors in the development of heart disease, raising risk 39.5% and 33.9% respectively; according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Researchers found TV watchers may have double the risk of heart attack.

New Dietary Guidelines For Americans

The government have issued the first update in five years of their "Dietary Guidelines for Americans."

But, despite significant talk about the U.S. obesity crisis, many of the major cornerstones of those previous guidelines have remained intact.

On the upside, the guidelines do emphasize the need for physical activity, and encourage eating more foods like vegetables, fruits, wholegrains, seafood, and also cutting back on sodium, trans fats, sugar, and refined grains.

Jack Lalanne: His Legacy

The Godfather of fitness - Jack Lalanne - has passed at the age of 96. Nobody in this past century has had more influence on the world of fitness than this man.

Lalanne led an illustrious health-centered life and influenced millions through his TV show, informercials and books.

For better or worse, Lalanne also tranformed the landscape of fitness equipment and gyms.
